Hi, I had a baby 2 1/2 ago, and i'm in the difficult process of shifting my last stone of weight. I've been on/off slim fast milkshake powders for the last couple of months now, and i have noticed that less then 1 hour after i have consumed a shake i start feeling bloated and have stomach cramping and lots of wind. I can actually hear my stomach gurgling and churning. It can last for several hours afterwards and is very uncomfortable and embarrassing. After my previous pregnancies I used slim fast and had no problems, but now i seem to feel worse after every shake. Is there something obvious in the milkshake which could be causing it? Some flavours: strawberry and chocolate are much worse then others, e.g. cafe late. It has got to the point that although i'm losing weight its not worth the discomfort as it makes me feel tired and ill. Is this a common problem? I am not intolerant to many foods, but i get similar symptoms with slim-fast that I get after eating bread. I can't work out what it is in the milkshake i should be trying to avoid! Please could you help me?
Hi,i found my self that i had a lot of wind and stomach ache for the first few wks but then it sort of stopped. i also felt tired too but not unwell. have you spoken to your doctor about this just to make sure its not something else. I can't eat bread to often either as this makes me feel unwell. Maybe that because your doing it on and off your still get the hunger pains. i normally start my morning with a coffee about 8,shake at about 9.snack around 10:30,lunch shake about 12:30 followed my snack at 1:30. i have my last snack between 3-4 and dinner at 6. which seems to work for me. Try eating snacks that keep the hunger away longer. I sometime have a crumpet with jam on,special k bar.crackers,sf snacks, low calorie crisps etc there our so many things you can have just need to look at calories on the packets. Hope this helps a little xx
sounds like u may not be able to digest large amounts of sugar...best off to ask your dr though
You maybe need to drink more water - maybe you're dehydrated
Slim.Fast is quite high in fibre, which can cause symptoms such as feeling bloated, constipation, stomach cramps, amongst others. However, these symptoms are usually temporary and normally disappear within a few days. Introducing foods high in fibre into your diet is best done gradually, and also it is important to increase your intake of fluids; this is because as the fibre passes through your system it absorbs more fluids. So a lack of fluids can also cause gut problems such as bloating, and cramps in the stomach area. Remember to try to drink around 2 litres of water a day.
Eating too soon before exercising can also sometimes cause stomach problems. Ideally, you should allow about 2 hours after eating before beginning exercise. Symptoms can also be experienced when making rapid changes to your diet, for example if you were consuming 3500 calorie before, and are now only consuming 1200-1400 calories.
I would recommend that you stay on the diet for a few days and make sure you drink enough water. However, if symptoms persist for more than a few days I would advise that you cease the plan, and consult your doctor.
I hope this information is useful.
Thank you everyone for your advice!!! WOW! You are all doing so great with your diets, well done!! I've had a really busy week with my kids and decided to have a week off to see if the stomach aches improved. Yes, they have, but my weight is staying the same and not shifting as quickly as I was hoping it would. Going back on Slimfast tommorow but this time i am going to do it properly - drink lots more water, eat snacks in between etc. I was doing it without the snacks before and probably not drinking enough. I have just over a month until my 10 year wedding anniversary when i go away and get to buy some new clothes, so i'm gonna try REALLY hard over the next few weeks!! Had my first chocolate craving in ages this evening and nearly ate a cadburys caramel bar (would have been gutted if i had given in, because ive worked so hard at avoiding chocolate over the past few weeks) but went to the fridge and had a toffee mullerlight yoghurt instead! That was really hard!!! Miss my chocolate! lol
Hi... I have the same issues but like Slimline I suffer from IBS - Also, I have a slight lactose intollerance and so have to make my shakes with lactofree milk (with half water as its semi-skimmed) as if I used normal milk I really suffer! But I also think that the ammount of fibre in the bars is affecting my bowel habits! Lol!
I would deffinately have a word with your GP. This diet it good but you have to enjoy doing it and not be uncomfortable!
Good luck and keep us all updated
I have these symptoms but I have IBS and bread affects me too, It has not worsened since I have started SF, in fact I found my bloating and wind has much improved. I did get heaches and the urge to go to the loo but I understand this is normal with initial weight loss.
As hapymumwobblybum says, might be a good idea to speak to your GP.
Hope you feel better soon.
